The Mediator – Dr. Gladys Rothbell

Dr. Gladys Rothbell is a divorce mediator as well as a family therapist. She has extensive experience working as a mediator and psychotherapist with couples and families going through difficult transitions or crises. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology, concentrated in family issues, and is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.).

Dr. Rothbell has been in private practice since 1993, mediating divorces as well as pre-nuptial agreements, and assisting couples and families in finding constructive resolutions for their problems.

Prior to 1993, Dr. Gladys Rothbell worked for two decades on government and foundation funded projects, focused on assisting couples and families experiencing problems and crises. (Funding agencies included the U.S. Justice Department, Stony Brook University, Center for Urban Education, and the Long Island Regional Medical/Community Health Planning Programs)

In these positions Dr. Rothbell:

• Assessed the unmet medical and mental health needs of Long Island families
• Evaluated special programs for children failing in school
• Directed research with immigrant women who came to this country prior to 1920, to learn first-hand how they managed to deal with the dramatic, often traumatic, changes in their lives
• Assisted refugees from all over the world who were granted asylum in the United States. Provided job re-training, English language skills, and counseling for the refugees and their families to help them turn a crisis into an opportunity

In addition, Dr. Rothbell has taught numerous courses on marriage and the family at Stony Brook University and lectured and written extensively on the subject.

In her role as a divorce mediator, Dr. Rothbell is able to draw on her wealth of experience with couples and families facing problems and changes in their lives. As a family therapist she can make suggestions about how and when to inform children of plans for divorce, and she can provide support in what is necessarily an emotionally difficult process.
